How to Remove Mildew Smell from Towels




Keeping your towels clean and odorless is very important. If they are not clean then it can transmit many diseases as the bacteria grow on an unclean towel. Often mildew smell comes from towel if you do not give it enough air to dry on time. There are many methods through which mildew smell from towels can be removed. . You can adopt anyone of the following methods to remove Mildew Smell from Towels.


Method 1 (Using Sunlight)

Things you will be required:

·      Hanger.
·      Open window area.
·      Dryer sheets.
·      Vinegar.
·      Hot water.

Steps:

1.   First you have to check the level of smell that is coming from your towel. That is if only a corner of the towel is producing the mildew smell then in that case you should hang it on the hanger and let it dry near an open window. If you have access to sunlight then in that case enough sunlight daily should be given to your towel.

2.   You can wash your towel afterword if it is required.

3.   After that, when folding your towel to be placed in your shelves then it is advisable to place dryer sheets from one towel to another so that smell is not caught from contact.

4.   However, if the mildew smell is really bad then you have to adopt an altogether different strategy. So instead of directly washing the towel with regular detergent and hot water, do pretreatment with one cup of white vinegar and hot water. Then wash it normally as you usually do. After washing you can let it dry under sun or under morning wind and the smell will be gone.



Method 2 (Using Borax)

Things you will be required:

·      Laundry detergent.
·      Hot water.
·      Borax.
·      Vinegar.
·      Fabric softeners.
·      Water.

Steps:

1.   To get rid of the mildew smell you have to wash the stains as usual but you just have to add certain ingredients so that you can get rid of the smell within no time.

2.   After adding hot water in washing machine, add few drops of laundry detergent but very little as too much can destroy the fabric altogether. Once you have added the detergent you can add little bit of borax and half cup of vinegar. You can also add fabric softeners as this is really important in the case of towels.

3.   After you have rinsed it you can keep or hang it under direct exposure of sun so that it can dry effectively.

Method 3 (Using Non-Chlorine Bleach and Baking Soda)

Things you will be required:

·      Non chlorine bleach.
·      Baking soda.
·      Hot water.
·      White vinegar.
·      Sun light.

Steps:

1.   The best way to get rid of mildew stain is to use non chlorine bleach. Before washing it normally with a detergent and hot water, what you are supposed to do is to make a mixture of non chlorine bleach, bit of baking soda, hot water and cup of white vinegar. Place the towels in the solution and then rinse it well.

2.   Wash it normally and rinse it.

3.   You will see that the mildew smell will be gone by then.

4.   Allow it to dry under sunlight.

Method 4 (Giving to a Dry Cleaning Shop)

Things you will be required:

·      Laundry or dry cleaning shop.
·      Money.
·      Time.

Steps:

1.   Often it is the case that you are located in an area where there is very little sunlight or not much wind. In such situations the best thing to do would be to hand over your towels to dry cleaning shops, they will clean it in such a way that there will be no further mildew smell coming from it. However, in this case every week you should give to it to dry cleaners.

2.   You will also have to give money on weekly basis but it is totally worth it.

3.   The dry cleaners will take one day time or few hours’ time before they return your towels back, so in that case patience will be required.

Method 5 (By Placing in Boiling Water)

Things you will be required:

·      A big boiling utensil.
·      Stove.
·      Dryer sheets.

Steps:

1.   Boiling the towels can do the magic that you want. Add water in big boiling utensil and put it on fire. Then as the water boils keep adding the towels one by one. After sometime take them out and allow them to dry under the sunlight. Make sure it completely dries from all areas before you fold them.

2.   When you keep them on shelves add dryer sheets from one towel to another. So that the mildew smell do not get transfer to other clothes.

Tips and Warnings:

1.   The long term cure of the mildew stains is to stop the reason that is causing the stain or the smell in the first place.

2.   Everyday use a squeegee to wipe off excess water from the floor of the washroom, because floor is the area where mildew grows and can get transferred; keep your washroom as dry as possible after every use.
