How to Remove Ink Stains from White Shirts

If you ever open your cupboard, you are likely to find more white clothes present in it as compared to other colors, especially in the summer time when you tend to avoid dark colors. White shirts are usually your husband’s first choice when wearing his favorite black suit to the office. And when in office, they need a pen with them at all times. This is why you often notice ink stains near the pockets of your husband’s white shirts. Although commercial ink stain removers are present in the market, home remedies can help you avoid creating a hole in your wallet, and get rid of the stain at the same time.

There are two kinds of ink stains: water-based ink stains and non water-based ink stains. Water-based ink stains can easily be removed by solvent cleaners such as shampoo or dishwashing liquid detergent or even milk. However, for non water-based ink stains you will require cleaners containing alcohol, such as hairspray, nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol itself.

If there is any wet ink remaining on the shirt, get rid of it first by blotting it with a clean cloth or a paper towel. Also, test all cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of your shirt to check for any damage that they may cause to the shirt. Some fabrics may react to the solution adversely. Pour a drop on a side first. Leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes. Dab the spot. If the fabric discolors, do not use that cleaning solution on the shirt. If otherwise, continue with the cleaning solution. Lastly, place a paper towel or cloth under the stained area when treating the stain so that it absorbs the ink. After that proceeds by using any one of the following methods.

Method One (Using Milk)

Things that you will require:

·      Milk
·      Bowl
·      Lemon
·      Clean, soft cloths

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Pour iced milk in a tub or bowl and soak the stain in it. However, if your shirt is made from a sensitive material, such as silk, proceed in the following way:

2.   Squeeze 2 lemons into a bowl.

3.   Pour 1 dl of warm milk into the bowl, and mix.

4.   Now, take a clean, soft cloth and dip it into the solution.

5.   Apply the solution on to the stained area with the cloth and blot the stain to get rid of the stain.

6.   If a certain part of the cloth becomes completely saturated with the ink, switch to another part.

7.   Once the Ink Stain has been removed, wash as normal.

Method Two (Using Alcohol-Based Hairspray)

Things that you will require:

·      Alcohol-based hairspray
·      Clean, soft cloths or paper towels

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Firstly, take a bottle of alcohol-based hairspray, and spray it on to the stain. Saturate the stain completely.

2.   Leave the hairspray in place for 30 seconds.

3.   After 30 seconds, start blotting the stained area with a clean cloth or paper towel. The ink will transfer on to the cloth or towel.

4.   Wash as normal after the stain disappears.

Method Three (Using Dishwashing Liquid Detergent and White Vinegar)

Things that you will require:

·      Water
·      Dishwashing liquid detergent
·      Bowl
·      Clean, white cloths
·      White vinegar

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   The first step involves making your cleaning solution. Pour 1 cup water in a bowl, and add 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid detergent to it.

2.   Take a clean, white cloth and dip it in the solution.

3.   Now, apply the solution on to the stained area.

4.   Next, pour a few drops of white vinegar to the affected area.

5.   Leave it in place for 15 minutes.

6.   Dab the stained area using a clean, soft cloth to remove the stain.

7.   Lastly, rinse your shirt in cold water, and then, wash as normal. Your shirt should be brand new!
