How to Remove Grease Stains from the Driveway

If your car leaks oil, you are likely to have large, black puddles all over your driveway. Don’t blame your husband; it could be due to the lawnmower or a guest’s car too. There may be stains on which the driveway cleaners found at your regular store may not even work! Some households prefer changing their entire driveway if such an incident occurs. However, changing the driveway can be expensive and can take a long time. If you are looking for a cheap and easy solution that will remove grease stains from the driveway, you have come to the right place!

After you have ensured that your car or lawnmower has stopped leaking oil, start cleaning the grease from the driveway as soon as possible. Mop up the affected area with a clean cloth to absorb any excess grease that is present on the surface. Remember, if your driveway has an asphalt surface, it will soften and corrode away if the oil is left in place for too long. Also, wear protective glasses, face mask, rubber gloves and worn out clothes when dealing with acids.

Method One (Using Cat Litter)

Getting rid of grease stains using cat litter is the easiest and cheapest for you if you already have a cat in the house!

Things that you will require:

·      Cat litter
·      Stiff broom
·      Water
·      Garden hose
·      Powdered laundry detergent
·      Bowl
·      Stiff brush
·      Elbow grease

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Grab a box of cat litter, and pour a layer over the stained area.

2.   Now, crush the litter with your shoes, making sure that it covers the entire area. Cat litter absorbs excess grease from the surface.

3.   Leave the layer of cat litter in place for the night.

4.   The next morning, grab a stiff broom, and brush away the cat litter from your driveway. The stains would have disappeared by now.

5.   Dispose of the cat litter carefully. Get rid of it as you would get rid of biohazardous material.

6.   Apply powdered laundry detergent to the stained area. Do not add water to it. Do so with a hard, stiff brush and elbow grease.

7.   Leave it in place for 2-3 minutes, and then lift it. Dispose it off with the cat litter.

8.   Next, pour some powdered laundry detergent in a bowl, and a small amount of water to it, enough to make a paste out of it.

9.   Now, apply the paste on to the stained area and scrub it in with a brush. Do so in a circular motion, moving from the outside edges towards the centre.

10.   When done, scrape the paste off the driveway.

11.   Rinse your driveway with water using a garden hose.

12.   Your driveway has been cleaned!

Tip:

Cat litter works best on stains that are still wet. It may not prove to be so useful if using on stains that have been set in for a long time.

Method Two (Using Pepsi or Coca Cola)

Who doesn’t have a fizzy drink at home these days? It may not be good for health, but it can definitely be useful in removing grease stains from the driveway!

Things that you will require:

·      Pepsi/Coca cola
·      Stiff brush
·      Water
·      Garden hose

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Grab a can or two of pepsi or coca cola from inside your refrigerator, and pour a uniform layer over the entire stain.

2.   Now, grab a stiff brush, and start scrubbing the stain.

3.   Pour more as required.

4.   Let the stain remain in place for the night.

5.   The next morning, rinse the affected area with plain water using a garden hose.

6.   The stain should have disappeared!
