How to remove Pet Urine stains from a mattress

ats and dogs are the most common pets that people keep. They are taken in at a young age and potty trained so that they only use their litter box. Pets can be very hard to keep if they aren’t trained properly and its worse when they are trained but they urinate around the house when you have left them alone at home.

The most disturbing thing about that is the smell. The urine smell is so overwhelming that it can be smelled as you enter the room, when if it far away. Most of the times they choose to go on the mattress because it gives them an illusion of mud that they can paw on after urinating. Removing pet urine stains from a mattress can be tricky but not impossible. Here are some methods with which you can remove the stains effectively.

Method 1

Although it is a long method, it will make sure that the urine stains have been removed completely. With the peroxide smell it might even discourage your pet from urinating on your mattress again. The items required are easily available and their use is simple.

Things that you will require:

·      Cleaning paper towels
·      Vinegar
·      Water
·      Spray bottle
·      Baking soda
·      Cleaning towels
·      Gloves
·      Liquid dishwasher
·      Hydrogen peroxide
·      Portable vacuum
·      Empty bowl
·      Tooth brush

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Put on the gloves first. If the stain on the mattress is fresh, spread cleaning paper towels on it so that they absorb the cat/dog urine from it. Make sure you dispose of the towels into the litter box where you want them to urinate in future. If you leave them anywhere else, the smell will get absorbed into that place making your pet think that it is allowed to urinate at that spot.

2.   Take the empty owl and add a cup of vinegar and half cup of water to it. Pour this mixture into the spray bottle. Spray the area that has been stained. Don’t worry about over using the mixture. Spray till the area is soaked with the mixture. Take the cleaning towel, spread it on the sprayed area and exert pressure with hands so that the towel absorbs both the mixture and the urine. Repeatedly do this till the area isn’t soaked anymore. This will take out most of the urine from the mattress.

3.   Cover the urine stain with baking soda. Make sure you don’t miss a spot.

4.   Rinse the bowl and add quarter cup hydrogen peroxide with a tsp. of the dishwasher liquid. Mix the two thoroughly and then pour it over the baking soda. Use the tooth brush to mix the peroxide solution with baking soda. And scrub it into the mattress. One you have thoroughly scrubbed, leave it on for fifteen minutes.

5.   Rinse the bowl again and fill it with water. Take a cleaning towel, dip it in water and start removing the baking soda and peroxide mixture. Do this till the mattress has been cleaned.

6.   In order to be sure that all the chemicals have been removed, use the portable vacuum cleaner. This is complete the process of pet urine stain removal.

Method 2

Enzyme cleaner method is a quick way to get rid of pet urine on your mattress. The cleaner is available in the market. Any brand would do. But this won’t get rid of the smell. You might need to be careful that your pet doesn’t go near the spot for a week or two.

Things that you will require:

·      Enzyme cleaner
·      Water
·      Cleaning towels
·      Empty bowl

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Blot the stained mattress with cleaning towels to remove any urine left on the surface.

2.   Now take the enzyme cleaner and pour it onto the stains. Use excess of the enzyme cleaner because using a small amount would not clean the area effectively. Let the cleaner remain on the mattress for about fifteen minutes.

3.   Use the cleaning towel to remove the enzyme cleaner. Make sure that there isn’t any left.

4.   Fill the empty bowl with water and dip a cleaning towel in it. Start cleaning the enzyme cleaner with water. Remove any trace of it.

5.   Leave the mattress outside in the sun to dry.

Warnings:

·      Pets have a keen sense of smell so make sure whatever you have used to clean their urine is disposed of efficiently. Put all the items used in a plastic bag and tie it up nicely before throwing in trash.

·      To make your pet not urinate at the same spot, use deodorant on the spot every day. Eventually the smell will go away.
