How to remove Bird Poop Stains from Concrete

The weather is becoming pleasant and this pleasant weather brings along with it great tidings. Flowers are in their bloom and chirping birds are in the sky. Although this scenario that I have sketched before you appears to be very scenic, yet the chirping birds come with a consequence.

Have you ever experienced waking up on a bright morning with a lazy smile on your face, opening the windows to greet a bright morning but getting stopped in your tracks by a hoard of bird poop stains adorning your concrete pavement or sidewalk?

At such a moment, all you can do is curse your feathery mates to hell as you try out the figure out the best way to get rid of these poop stains from concrete. Bird poop stains are essentially organic in their nature and a tad acidic. Moreover the type of stain you are dealing with depends upon what the bird had digested before it egested right on your concrete. The stain could be a mixture of berries, nuts, seeds, gravel and organic matter.

However, removing these stains can be an easy job if you know what to do. Following are some effective tips which will enable you to clean these stains and get rid of them for good.

Method One

The following method works extremely well for the removal of bird poop stains from concrete. When we say stains, we mean fresh and old alike. Since it also employs ammonia and hydrogen per oxide, therefore it will enable you to get rid of the most stubborn stains.

Things that you will require:

·      Hose
·      Liquid Dish washing detergent
·      Natural fiber scrub brush
·      Saw dust
·      Broom
·      Dust pan
·      Bowl
·      Hydrogen per oxide
·      Ammonia

Steps that you need to take:

1.   The first step involves hosing off the surface, so that maximum bird droppings can be washed away.

2.   Cover the dropping stain with liquid dish washing detergent. Rub the detergent onto the poop stain with a natural fibered scrub brush. This will loosen the stain and help in its removal from the concrete surface.

3.   Instead of rinsing the soap, it’s better if you cover it with saw dust. Saw dust will absorb the poop stain, soap and water. Leave it lying on the stain for some time, approximately twenty minutes and then sweep it off with a broom and dust pan.

4.   If any remnants of the stain or discoloration by the bird muck are still left behind, then you ought to treat it with something strong. In this case make a mixture of 12 percent hydrogen per oxide and ammonia by mixing one table spoon of the former and three drops of the latter.

5.   Pour this mixture onto the poop stain and let it sit for some time.

6.   Again cover this with saw dust and sweep it up.

7.   Enjoy your stain-free concrete pavement or side walk.

Tip:

To prevent birds from coming to your drive way, hang something shiny like aluminum pans. However, check if there is a nest nearby because otherwise the mother will keep coming back.

Method two

Removing bird poop stains from concrete surfaces can be pretty easy, if you have a hose, broom and a little muscle. If it still refuses to come off, then make use of muriatic acid.

Things that you will require:

·      Garden hose with a sprayer attachment
·      Push broom
·      Muriatic acid
·      Water

Steps that you need to take:

1.    Spray water on the concrete surface with a garden hose. Make sure that you spray plenty of water on the surface so that the stains are sufficiently dampened.

2.   Use a stiff brush to rub the stains and then sweep them off with a push broom.

3.   If these relatively gentle methods are unsuccessful in getting the stains out, then take the help of a more specialized cleaning product. In this case, we shall be using muriatic acid.

4.   Take one part acid and four parts water. Always remember that acid should be poured into water and not water into acid.

5.   Apply the solution on left over stains. As soon as the stain is gone, rinse the acid off. This is because it is very strong and may etch the concrete.

Precaution:

Wear protective gloves and glasses while working with the acid.
