Keeping your
towels clean and odorless is very important. If they are not clean then it can
transmit many diseases as the bacteria grow on an unclean towel. Often mildew
smell comes from towel if you do not give it enough air to dry on time. There
are many methods through which mildew smell from towels can be removed. .
You
can adopt anyone of the following methods to remove Mildew Smell from Towels.
Method 1 (Using Sunlight)
Things you will be required:
·
Hanger.
·
Open window area.
·
Dryer sheets.
·
Vinegar.
·
Hot water.
Steps:
1. First
you have to check the level of smell that is coming from your towel. That is if
only a corner of the towel is producing the mildew smell then in that case you
should hang it on the hanger and let it dry near an open window. If you have
access to sunlight then in that case enough sunlight daily should be given to
your towel.
2. You
can wash your towel afterword if it is required.
3. After
that, when folding your towel to be placed in your shelves then it is advisable
to place dryer sheets from one towel to another so that smell is not caught
from contact.
4. However,
if the mildew smell is really bad then you have to adopt an altogether
different strategy. So instead of directly washing the towel with regular
detergent and hot water, do pretreatment with one cup of white vinegar and hot
water. Then wash it normally as you usually do. After washing you can let it
dry under sun or under morning wind and the smell will be gone.
Method 2 (Using Borax)
Things you will be required:
·
Laundry detergent.
·
Hot water.
·
Borax.
·
Vinegar.
·
Fabric softeners.
·
Water.
Steps:
1. To
get rid of the mildew smell you have to wash the stains as usual but you just
have to add certain ingredients so that you can get rid of the smell within no
time.
2. After
adding hot water in washing machine, add few drops of laundry detergent but
very little as too much can destroy the fabric altogether. Once you have added
the detergent you can add little bit of borax and half cup of vinegar. You can
also add fabric softeners as this is really important in the case of towels.
3. After
you have rinsed it you can keep or hang it under direct exposure of sun so that
it can dry effectively.
Method 3 (Using Non-Chlorine
Bleach and Baking Soda)
Things you will be required:
·
Non chlorine
bleach.
·
Baking soda.
·
Hot water.
·
White vinegar.
·
Sun light.
Steps:
1. The
best way to get rid of mildew stain is to use non chlorine bleach. Before
washing it normally with a detergent and hot water, what you are supposed to do
is to make a mixture of non chlorine bleach, bit of baking soda, hot water and
cup of white vinegar. Place the towels in the solution and then rinse it well.
2. Wash
it normally and rinse it.
3. You
will see that the mildew smell will be gone by then.
4. Allow
it to dry under sunlight.
Method 4 (Giving to a Dry
Cleaning Shop)
Things you will be required:
·
Laundry or dry
cleaning shop.
·
Money.
·
Time.
Steps:
1. Often
it is the case that you are located in an area where there is very little
sunlight or not much wind. In such situations the best thing to do would be to
hand over your towels to dry cleaning shops, they will clean it in such a way
that there will be no further mildew smell coming from it. However, in this
case every week you should give to it to dry cleaners.
2. You
will also have to give money on weekly basis but it is totally worth it.
3. The
dry cleaners will take one day time or few hours’ time before they return your
towels back, so in that case patience will be required.
Method 5 (By Placing in
Boiling Water)
Things you will be required:
·
A big boiling
utensil.
·
Stove.
·
Dryer sheets.
Steps:
1. Boiling
the towels can do the magic that you want. Add water in big boiling utensil and
put it on fire. Then as the water boils keep adding the towels one by one.
After sometime take them out and allow them to dry under the sunlight. Make
sure it completely dries from all areas before you fold them.
2. When
you keep them on shelves add dryer sheets from one towel to another. So that
the mildew smell do not get transfer to other clothes.
Tips and Warnings:
1. The
long term cure of the mildew stains is to stop the reason that is causing the
stain or the smell in the first place.
2. Everyday
use a squeegee to wipe off excess water from the floor of the washroom, because
floor is the area where mildew grows and can get transferred; keep your
washroom as dry as possible after every use.
