How to Remove Highlighter Stains

A personal favorite way of remembering important points is to highlight them, and just read the highlighted area for revision later. To differentiate between the importance of points, use different colors. When doing so, one usually ends up getting highlighter stains on their hands, arms, faces and clothes. Although you would expect such stains to be removed easily by simple water and soap or laundry detergent, there may be times when this may not happen. Are you looking for a solution? It lies with us! This article provides you with methods using simple household ingredients to get rid of the stubborn highlighter stains on your hands and clothes.

The second you spot the highlighter stains, grab a paper napkin or tissue and blot any excess highlighter that may be present on your hand or shirt. Read the label of the shirt and test all cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of the clothing before you actually proceed with the cleaning process. In case of any discoloring or damage to the shirt, do not use that item on the entire garment. You can adopt any one of the following methods to remove highlighter stains from your clothes or skin.

Method One (Removing Highlighter Stains from Clothes)

Things that you will require:

·         Clean towels
·         Nail polish remover
·         Laundry detergent

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   To start off, place a towel on a hard, flat surface, and put the stained part of your shirt on top of it with the stain facing the towel not you.

2.   Grab a clean, white towel or a few cotton balls and pour some nail polish remover on to the towel or the cotton ball.

3.   Start blotting the stained area with it. As the color transfers to the towel, move from one part of the towel to another. If using cotton balls, change the cotton balls once it becomes completely dry or colored.

4.   Keep pouring and blotting till the entire highlighter stain is removed.

5.   Once you have gotten rid of the entire stain, wash the clothing as normal with your regular laundry detergent.

Method Two (Removing Highlighter Stains from Clothing)

Things that you will require:
·      Bucket
·      Measuring cup
·      Water
·      Bleach
·      Laundry detergent

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   If the stain has been left on the clothing for too long or has set in too deep, nail polish remover may not be able to remove it. In such a case, bleach can be used. To do so, grab a bucket and fill it with water.

2.   Add the bleach to the water in the amount stated on the packaging of the product. If you are using bleach on colored clothing, remember to check for color fastness earlier. Use color-safe bleach.

3.   Now, place the garment in the bucket for 15 minutes only and let the bleach treat the stained area.

4.   The highlighter stain should have disappeared by now. Wash your shirt as normal.

Method One (Removing Highlighter Stains from Skin)

Things that you will require:

·      Cotton balls
·      Baby oil/ Baby lotion
·      Q-tip
·      Handwash/ Soap

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Although highlighter stains come off with the passage of time, they look unclean for the time that they are there. Hence, you want such stains to be removed before you go out or before your friends come over. Grab the things listed above and get to work.

2.   Take a cotton ball, and pour a small amount of baby oil or baby lotion on it.

3.   Rub the stained skin with the damp cotton ball. Keep rubbing gently till the entire stain has been removed.

4.   You can also use a q-tip to remove a highlighter stain that has found its way under your fingernails.

5.   Wash your hands as normal.

Method Two (Removing Highlighter Stains from Skin)

Things that you will require:

·      Rubbing alcohol
·      Cotton ball
·      Q-tip
·      Handwash/ Soap
·      Lotion

Steps that you will need to take:

1.   Rubbing alcohol can be your solution to quite a few stains problems. To remove the highlighter stain from your skin, grab a cotton ball and pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol on it.

2.   Rub the highlighter stained skin gently with the cotton ball.

3.   Change the cotton ball as it becomes dry. Using the same cotton ball over and over again will only make the stain set deeper inside.

4.   Use a q-tip for the area underneath your fingernails.

5.   Wash your hands as normal.

6.   If your skin feels dry, moisturize it with your regular lotion.
